Best time to see the underwater waterfall

Best Time
A morning slot between May and November, on a calm day. The sun needs to be high, roughly 10:00 to 14:00, so the pale sand and the dark drop-off contrast properly, and the sea needs to be flat and clear so the plume is not muddied. The dry, cooler winter from May to November gives you the calmest lee coast and the clearest water. December to April is hot and wet; January to March is cyclone season and the months with the most cancelled flights.

Season

Mauritius has two seasons and the south-west coast feels both. From May to November the south-east trades blow, the west and south-west sit in the lee, the lagoons are flat and the water is at its clearest. This is when I would fly. From December to April it is hot and wet, with afternoon cloud building over the plateau and heavy rain washing silt into the lagoons; the sandfall still shows on a good day but the good days are fewer. January to March is cyclone season, and it is when the apron sees the most holds and reschedules. Water temperature is 22 to 28 °C all year, which matters for the catamaran day and not at all for the flight.

Time of day

Two things push you towards the morning. The first is the sun. The illusion is a contrast effect between pale shallow sand and near-black deep water, and it is sharpest with the sun high, roughly 10:00 to 14:00. Earlier the light is low and the water reads flat; later the glare off the west-facing sea gets in the way. The second is cloud. On most days, especially in the wet season, cloud builds over the Black River Gorges and the plateau through the afternoon, and the airport loop crosses exactly that ground. A late-morning slot gets both the light and the crossing. On the flight with transfers the pickup time is set by the operator; ask for the earlier one.

Sea state

This is the part nobody tells you. After two days of heavy rain, or when a big south-westerly swell is running, the sand plume goes brown and the hard edge softens into a smear. The waterfall shape is still there; the picture is not. Calm sea, little swell, clear water. If you have flexibility, book the flight for the middle of your stay rather than the last day, so a weather hold can be moved rather than lost. The mechanism, and why clarity matters so much, is on is the underwater waterfall real.

Le Morne Brabant and the lagoon on a calm winter morning

Booking lead time

The airport flight has five seats and one aircraft, so it fills. Book several days ahead in July and August and again in December and January, when the island is full. In the shoulder months you can often book the day before. The scenic flight needs a minimum of two to book and four to operate, so a couple booking a quiet slot may be moved to one with other passengers; the operator handles that. Free cancellation to 24 hours before applies to all of them, so there is no penalty for booking early and moving.

When the weather cancels

The operator decides, usually on the morning, sometimes at the helipad. Nobody flies you into cloud on the gorges to keep a slot. You are offered a new time or a refund. What I tell people: if it is cloudy over the mountains, move your date; if the swell is big, move your date; if the sun is out and the lagoon is flat, go now, because it will not stay that way all week.

What works

  • May to November: calm lee coast, clear water, fewest holds
  • Late morning: sun high, cloud not yet on the gorges
  • Free cancellation to 24 hours means booking early costs nothing
  • Shoulder months often let you book the day before

Worth knowing

  • January to March: cyclone season, most cancellations
  • After heavy rain or a big swell the plume goes muddy for a day or two
  • July–August and December–January fill several days out
  • Afternoon slots in the wet season fight the cloud on the plateau

Which flight to book, and what each actually shows, is on how to see the underwater waterfall. If the season is against you, the hike is the fallback: Le Morne tours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to see the underwater waterfall?

Any month from May to November, when the south-west coast is in the lee of the trades and the water is clearest. Within that, I would avoid nothing. December to April works on good days; January to March is cyclone season and the worst for cancellations.

What time of day is best for a helicopter flight in Mauritius?

Late morning. The sun is high enough by about 10:00 for the sand-and-deep-water contrast, and cloud has usually not yet built over the Black River Gorges, which the airport loop crosses. See how the flight day works.

Which months should I avoid in Mauritius?

For flying, January to March: cyclone season, heavy rain, muddy lagoons and the most weather holds. The island is still worth visiting then; the flight is just less certain to go.

How far ahead should I book the helicopter?

Several days in July, August, December and January. In quieter months the day before is often fine. Free cancellation to 24 hours means there is no reason not to book early.

What happens if my flight is cancelled for weather?

The operator reschedules or refunds. Book the flight for the middle of your stay so a hold can be moved. What weather does to the price and terms is on the cost page.
