Underwater waterfall tour reviews

Reviews
What this page is: seven tours sold on GetYourGuide for the Le Morne corner of Mauritius, read one at a time by someone who spent six seasons on the airport helicopter apron and now walks people up the mountain. Three of them fly over the sandfall off Le Morne. One flies the other coast and does not. Three stay on the ground or on the lagoon and see the mountain, the dolphins or Chamarel, but not the illusion. I say which is which in the first paragraph of every review, because that is the thing people get wrong.

If you only want the photograph, start with the airport helicopter review: its route is built around the waterfall. If you want to be collected from your hotel and do not mind a shorter flight, read the scenic flight with transfers. If you have already ruled out flying, the Le Morne hike is the one I would book, and I would still tell you the summit shows a rough shape rather than the effect. The side-by-side of all seven is on all tours.

How I score these

I do not run any of these tours and I have not paid for all seven as a customer. What I have done is brief a lot of passengers before they walked out to the aircraft, fly the Le Morne loop more times than I can count in the jump seat, and guide the mountain most weeks. So I read the operator’s own itinerary against the minutes I know each leg takes, then read the traveller reviews looking for the same sentence twice. Four things decide where a tour lands.

Insider tip

Ratings here run from 4.5 to 5.0, and the 5.0 comes from five people. Read the review counts as well as the score: 638 people have rated the hike and five have rated the airport helicopter. Both numbers are honest; only one of them is settled.

Check dates on the flight that sees it

The airport helicopter is the widget I leave at the bottom of most pages because it is the flight whose route is drawn around the waterfall. Morning slots go first in July, August, December and January, so book several days ahead then. If you are still deciding whether the flight earns its price, read is it worth it first, and the guide if you want the shelf, the drop-off and the sand explained in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Which tour actually shows the underwater waterfall?

The three helicopter products: the 40-minute airport flight, the 35-minute scenic flight with hotel transfers and the 45-minute private charter. The seaplane sold here flies the north-east coast and does not pass Le Morne. The hike, catamaran and road tour see the mountain and the lagoon, not the sandfall.

Are these reviews independent?

Yes. This site is not a helicopter operator, not a seaplane operator and not GetYourGuide. I earn a commission if you book through a link here, which is set out on the affiliate disclosure page, and it is the same commission on all seven tours, so there is nothing to gain by pushing the dearest one.

Why don’t you name the operators?

Because you are booking a product with a route, a duration and a set of conditions, and those are what I review. The same company can fly a good season and a bad one. Prices, minimum numbers and cancellation terms are the operators’ own and live on GetYourGuide; how to compare them without being misled is on what a flight costs.

Do you review the seaplane from Le Morne itself?

No, because it is not sold on GetYourGuide and I only review what you can book here. Seaplanes do lift from the Le Morne lagoon with other operators. The one on this site takes off from Grand Gaube on the far north-east coast; the seaplane review and helicopter or seaplane explain the difference.
