Can you see the underwater waterfall from Le Morne Brabant?

I guide this trail, so I will be straight about it. From the top on a calm morning, looking south-west off the tip, you can see where the pale shelf water ends and the deep water begins, and on a clear day the streaks of sand running out over that edge. It reads as a shape, not as a waterfall; you are looking across it at an angle from one point, not down on it from a moving aircraft that can orbit and bank. Morning is best, before the sun swings west and puts glare on the sea. Stephane from France described “a magnificent vantage point over the Le Morne lagoon”, and that is what the summit is really for.
The mountain is worth the climb on its own terms. It was a refuge for maroons, escaped enslaved people, in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape since 2008. The guides on the hike here were born in Le Morne village, are licensed by the Tourism Authority and first-aid certified, and the upper section is not open without them. The trail runs coastal forest, the old slave route, then rock, and Petra from Croatia called it “very steep, requires preparation”. Under-8s are not taken. Closed grippy shoes are mandatory. Water, biscuits and breakfast are included; the route and reviews are on the hike review.
Who should climb instead of fly: anyone on a budget who would rather have four hours on the mountain than two minutes over the sandfall, anyone who cannot fly for medical reasons, and anyone who wants both, because the two are on different days and different scales. If the picture is what you want, the answer is on how to see the underwater waterfall.

Frequently asked questions
Can you hike Le Morne Brabant without a guide?
The lower section, yes. The upper section, where the view is, is only allowed with authorised guides. The guided hike here takes about four hours in groups of up to 12.
How hard is the Le Morne Brabant hike?
Steep and sun-exposed, with the last third scrambling on rock with your hands. Reviewers keep using the word “fitness”. Not for under-8s. Detail on Le Morne tours.
Is the view from Le Morne Brabant as good as the helicopter?
Different. The summit gives you the lagoon, the reef and the rough shape of the sandfall from 556 m; the helicopter gives you the illusion itself, in orbit, from higher. Whether that is worth the flight is on is it worth it.
