Helicopter tours over the underwater waterfall: three flights compared
I have flown the Le Morne loop more times than I can count, mostly in the jump seat, and I briefed passengers for it for six seasons. What I tell friends is this: the waterfall is the reason you book, but it is not most of the flight. Every helicopter here crosses the island to get to it, and the crossing is the bulk of the minutes. That is not a complaint. Grand Bassin with the 33 m Shiva at the gate, the Black River Gorges, Chamarel’s coloured earths and its 100 m waterfall are all better from above than from a car park. But if you are counting seconds over the sandfall, count on a minute or two per orbit, and one or two orbits.
The three flights, plainly
The 40-minute airport flight is the one whose itinerary is written around the illusion. You meet at Gate 3, SSR International Airport at Plaine Magnien, 30 minutes before, passport in hand; no transfer is included, so budget 60 to 75 minutes by road from Le Morne or the west coast. The loop runs airport, Grand Bassin, Kanaka crater, Black River Gorges, Flic en Flac beaches, the Black River coast, the underwater waterfall off Le Morne, Chamarel, then the south coast home. The scenic flight with hotel transfers is the most-flown of the three, 4.6 from 98. A driver collects you (reviewers keep naming Vikash), the whole thing takes about three hours door to door and the flight itself is 35 minutes, varying with weather. The route is the west coast rather than the plateau: Tamarin and the dolphin bay, Île aux Bénitiers, Le Morne and the waterfall, Chamarel, then Le Pouce and Pieter Both behind Port Louis. Apron know-how
Weights. Seats are allocated by weight for balance, not by who booked first. Declare honestly at booking; the ground crew will weigh or ask on the day anyway, and an unbalanced load means reseating in front of everyone. A party of six may be split across two aircraft.
Passport. The helipad is inside the airport perimeter, so you need a passport or copy to get through Gate 3, and the transfer flights ask for it too. A hotel key card is not a document.
Weather holds. Nobody flies you into cloud. In the wet season, December to April and especially January to March, holds are routine; the operator reschedules or refunds. If the morning is grey over the gorges, move your date rather than take a flight that skips the plateau. Mid-morning, roughly 10:00 to 14:00, with the sun high and little swell, is when the sand plume shows best. Details on best time to see it.
Minimum numbers. The scenic flight needs two to book and four to operate. If you are a couple, book early in the week and let the operator fill the aircraft; if you cannot risk a scrub, the airport flight or the private charter has no such condition.
Who should not fly. The airport flights are not for pregnant women, back problems or anyone prone to motion sickness. Doors stay on, headsets are provided, the pilot banks so both sides get the view, and the front seat sees furthest.
Wear something plain and dark. White T-shirts reflect in the Perspex and end up in every photo you take through the window. Sunglasses off for the pass, or polarised ones, which cut the glare on the water and make the sand streaks pop. Full list on what to bring.
