Le Morne tours on the ground and the lagoon: hike, catamaran, road tour
I live 3 km up the road in La Gaulette and I guide the trail, so this is the page I know from the ground rather than the jump seat. Three honest sentences first. The mountain is worth the climb on its own terms: UNESCO-listed since 2008 as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape, a refuge of maroons in the 18th and early 19th century, a national memorial. The lagoon is a good day out and the dolphins in Tamarin Bay are wild and there most mornings. And the illusion is not down here. My grandmother called it la rivière en bas la mer, the river under the sea, and she never saw it either; you need to be a few hundred metres up.
The Le Morne Brabant hike
Four hours, early start (the time shifts with the season), groups of no more than twelve, and a private option. The guides were born in Le Morne village, are licensed by the Tourism Authority and first-aid certified, and the second, upper section of the trail is only allowed with authorised guides, which is why you cannot just walk up. The route goes coastal forest, the UNESCO slave route, then rocky scrambling with hands on the last third, to viewpoints over the Le Morne lagoon; medicinal plants and the maroon history come with it. Water, biscuits and breakfast are included, plus hotel pickup and drop-off in the Le Morne area for the morning group and other areas by arrangement.
Read the small print as fitness advice. Not under eight, good balance, closed grippy shoes, sun exposure, and the guides will stop the hike if the weather turns; lighter alternatives are offered on request. The catamaran from La Gaulette
Check-in 09:15 at the Le Morne Anglers’ Club jetty in the Black River district, sail 09:30, back 15:30. Out of the Black River to Tamarin Bay to look for spinner and bottlenose dolphins (sightings not guaranteed; they are wild), snorkelling off La Preneuse or L’Harmonie, a barbecue lunch on board — fish, chicken, sausages, salads, with vegetarian, gluten-free and seafood-free versions on request — then Crystal Rock and free time at Île aux Bénitiers before the run home. Unlimited drinks, rum cocktails included. Hotel pickup and drop-off, life jackets, first aid, crew. Not for anyone seasick-prone or with limited mobility. No touching the marine life.

The southern road tour

Hike in the morning, catamaran the next day, and if the budget stretches, the 40-minute flight on a third. Done in that order you will stand on the mountain, sail under it and then see from the air what the other two could not show you.
Pair one with a flight, or accept the summit
The hike is a fraction of the cost of a flight and gives you the mountain, the history and the lagoon from 556 m. If that is what you can afford, take it and do not feel short-changed; it is a better morning than most people’s helicopter ride. But if the sandfall is why you came, the ground will not deliver it.
